Ascenders & Pulleys are commonly used with advanced ropework skills for rigging (often for working at height), big wall climbing and rescue. Other than for use in hauling systems and ascending ropes, climbers also use ascenders and pulleys for a wide range of different usages; including using some mechanical ascenders as back up's when abseiling (e.g. Petzl Shunt) or use devices, such as the Wild Country Ropeman, when crossing glaciers to isolate the rope from yourself if your partner falls down a crevasse.
