Cams (A.K.A. Camming Devices, or more correctly Spring Loaded Camming Devices) are pieces of climbing equipment that fit into parallel-sided or even slightly flared cracks to provide protection. Recent developments have included the introduction of micro-cams for use in smaller cracks. To read more about Cams read the Spring Loaded Cams section in our article ‘Rock Climbing Basics: Equipment’, view here.
Different manufacturers make Cams in different sizes, for example a size 1 Wild Country Technical Friend is smaller than a size 1 Black Diamond Camalot C4. To view the Rock + Run ‘Cam Size Comparison Chart’ click here.
If you're starting to build a rack and you do decide to invest in one or two cams, a good starting point is a couple of units around size 1 or 2, in the Wild Country Technical Friend sizing scale (0.4 to 0.75 in Black Diamond Camalot's).
