Descenders

Although most belay devices can be used for descending a rope, descenders are pieces of climbing hardwear that are specifically designed for abseiling.

Figure of Eights tend to be better at dissipating heat than belay devices, as well as being 'smoother' in use than many belay devices. The Petzl Stop is an auto-stopping device, designed specifically for descending single ropes and is popular among cavers, rescuers and people that work at height.

Please note that the Petzl Shunt is not a descender, but can be used as a mechanical prussik device for backing up abseils.
