A classic, but there are better choices these days

Everyone knows the ATC. It's a classic design and has become synonymous with belay devices in general.

That said, it's a slick device and with modern ropes getting ever thinner the ATC is starting to feel a bit dated. It's great if you want to pay out rope quickly and are confident of holding your partner, but it's definitely not for use with any rope less than 10mm. Abseils are smooth but just a bit too fast for my nerves.

With the latest devices offering multiple modes for different ropes, guide-mode belaying and use as makeshift ascenders, the classic ATC is not as good as it once was.

Pros:
Lightweight, easy to pay out, good keeper loop.

Cons:
Low holding power, only for thick ropes, not as fancy as the competition
