Totally redesigned for 2009, the ever popular Belay Master continues to set standards for safety and design.

The Belay Master is a tweaked version of the DMM Fat Boy HMS with a patented integral plastic clip that together increase the overall safety of the belay system. The clip can only be locked into place when the screwgate barrel is tightened into the locked position, thus providing a failsafe check that the biner is closed securely. The plastic clip also stops the Karabiner from rotating in the belay system and being cross-loaded.

The Belay Master is a mid-sized HMS with a large rope radius and soft angles on the top bar. That means that it works well with the vast majority of belay devices.

Fantastic belay

bought this as my first carabiner because of the added safety features, the plastic clip will not close if the screw-gate is not fully closed and when clipped in place will stop the biner from cross loading. The one downside to this biner is that when belaying my Black Diamond ATC Guide pops the clip off from time to time, so if you pick one up make sure the loop on the bottom of your belay is not as long as the ATC.
The rest are peasants in comparison...

I purchased my DMM belay master last year in Ailefroide, France. This is a fantastic carabiner that has a plastic clip that stops the carabiner from rotating whilst on your belay loop. With your belay device attached, the carabiner can be screw locked and the plastic clip covers the screw. The clip will not close if the screwgate is not closed which gives you peace of mind that you have indeed closed the screw. (I always double check this though). I have only found one downside to the DMM Belay Master and that is: If you are climbing and have the belay Master clipped to your harness (out of the way), you need to tighten the screwgate so that you can do up the plastic clip, else it catches on gear, chalk bag, clothing and anything else that brushes past. However, the benefits vastly outway this niggle. Get it bought, it is fab….
Simple device that gives you peace of mind

The DMM Belay Master is a fantastically simple bit of kit which will ensure you always do up the gait and will additionally prevent the karabiner rotating which can lead to cross loading. However the plastic clip can be pulled off the back bar of the carabineer and go flying off a crag never to be seen again. A simplest solution to this is to drill a small hole in the plastic catch (not a load bearing part) and pass some thin cord or a cable tie through the hole and secure it tight around the clip on the back bar.

A really good idea from DMM. The plastic clip helps ensure that the screwgate is fastened and prevents cross loading. Makes this a great choice for beginners or those needing confidence.
Some belay device loops can snag on the plastic gate. It can be a good idea to arrange something to stop the plastic gate getting knocked off and lost. Some people drill a small hole in the plastic and fit a keyring loop.
