Product Description

The Phantom carabiners are exceptionally light wiregates which make for excellent quickdraws.

The Phantom is a small sized wiregate carabiner. Being smaller keeps the weight down but DMM have not gone too radical. DMM have said "Sure, we could have made this biner smaller, and as a result, lighter, but there comes a point when a tiny biner becomes a key ring – too fiddley to hold. Functionality is just as important as weight."

Apart from size it is the I-Beam hot forged construction that is the major factor in keeping the weight down. This design enables the Phantom to have as little metal as possible, whilst still retaining its strength, this is apparent by the recessed areas on the biner.

Compare the weight saved to another of DMMs popular quickdraws the Spectre 2. The difference in weight between the two is 16g (76g Spectre, 60g Phantom). This may not sound a lot, but over 10 quickdraws that’s a saving of 160g, so over two extra Phantoms worth. You can therefore think of it as being able to take more gear for the same weight, or less weight to climb with and for the walk in!

  1. DMM Phantom review

Posted by Tom Newberry on 6th Dec 2010

I first bought a set of DMM Phantoms for a trip to Kalymnos. Straight away I was astonished at how light they where in comparison to my current set of draws. Before buying them I had one concern, which was whether my big hands would be able to clip the small carabineers as easily as the normal size ones. However after one or two routes I was once again back to my old quick clipping ways, almost preferring them to the one Petzl Sprit I own. Without a doubt these draws come into their own when onsighting, especially on long pitches. I have done plenty of routes requiring 20+ draws, which the phantoms could save you over 1kg in weight and at your limit that could be the make or break factor. If onsighting is where it is at for you, whether its trad or sport, then I thoroughly recommend adding a few Phantoms to your rack. I feel I defiantly owe at least one or two routes to them. My top tip if you don’t have a full rack of them would be to place your heavier draws low down saving the Phantoms for the top half of the route.
