Finally it’s here! The new Eastern Crags guide is probably the most eagerly anticipated book to hit the Rock and Run shelves in recent times. Covering as it does some of the finest and most enigmatic crags in the country the new volume is sure to whet the appetite of any trad aficionado.

In line with the other recent offerings from the FRCC, the 2011 volume has full colour photo topos for all the major crags. Many of these are inspiring to look at in their own right having caught the crags in the perfect light to pick some of the great rock architecture which is such a feature of the cliffs in this area. The action photos are again only of the highest quality with not a single poor shot on offer.

The guide covers the area from Kendal to the South, running up Thirlmere to Keswick and Carrock Fell in the North; and then to Penrith and Shap in the East. This area really does encompass some of the Lakes great trad crags such as Castle Rock, The Raven Crags (Thirlmere and Threshthwaite Cove), Iron Crag and Dove crag. Also covered is the wonderful and secluded Gouther Crag in Swindale, which really is one of the hidden gems of the Lakes. The popular bouldering areas of Kentmere and Carrock Fell are also briefly covered and the photo topos should provide enough problems to keep the occasional visitor to these areas busy.

In addition there are sections on just about everything a climber might find useful in a guidebook, from a list of Climbing Walls for a wet day, to a comprehensive and fascinating Historical Section and First Ascents List.
