Product Description

The Evolv Defy is a mid level shoe with a heavy leaning towards comfort. No doubt partly down to its out of the box comfort and low price it has become a very popular shoe with beginners.

That said the Defy maybe isn't the best choice for those just starting out at climbing. Although the sole is thin and provides great feel, it offers little support for feet unaccustomed to the strain of standing on small footholds. The thin sole and softish rubber compound also make it susceptible to wear, particularly with imprecise footwork on textured indoor walls.

We'd say the Defy is best suited to the more experienced climber looking for a sensitive shoe for days out routing  (making it perfect for gritstone), indoor climbing (particularly indoor bouldering), or mid grade circuit bouldering. For these purposes it provides a good level of performance at a very reasonable price.

  1. Good beginner's shoe

Posted by Andrew Gilmour on 6th May 2011

These were my second pair of climbing shoes after a 2nd hand pair of Scarpa’s that I inherited. The main difference I noticed between the 2 was that the instep wasn't as high as the Scarpa’s and therefore they fitted my feet slightly better.

I've used them for about 18 months, however after the first year the rand started to abrade and then wear down quickly. I noticed this especially after smearing on rougher volcanic rock at the beach when bouldering, and although expected has developed quicker than I would have liked. Otherwise they are a good value shoe and the stiffness and padding is spot-on for me.

I prefer the Velcro fitting over conventional lace-ups as I can get a more comfortable fit at the end of a hard day, and its obviously easier and less time consuming to loosen them off when not climbing.

Overall, a good beginners shoe but with a limited life-span. And one important thing - don't get them wet because they stink to high-heaven despite sprays and leaving them outside!

  2. Wear quick

Sticky shoe, soft rubber, wear far too quickly and not great for hooking

  3. Comfortable but wears quickly.

Posted by Ed on 24th Sep 2010

I bought these as my first pair of climbing shoes and at first was very impressed as they were comfortable enough to wear for several hours at a time and easily met my performance requirements as a complete beginner. They proved stiff enough to stand on small holds and offered reasonble friction when smearing on slabs. As I progressed on to slightly harder routes and especially boulder problems I noticed that they weren't great for attempting to heel hook as they seemed to flex away from the underside of the foot.

After about 2 months of climbing they were starting to wear out on the toes and speaking to other owners at the wall this seems to be a common problem, wearing out much quicker than many other rock shoes.

Overall not a bad shoe but I will be looking for something else next time.
