  1. Comfortable begginer/intermediate shoe...

Posted by Sarah on 3rd Aug 2011

These were my very first pair of climbing shoes which I purchased after about a month of climbing in rented shoes. I wanted something that would be comfortable but rated as a good performance shoe so that it would last me from entry level to an intemediate level if I managed to push my grade.

I've had them for nine months now and they are at the end of their lifetime with a hole in the toe areas, the soles coming unstuck from the fabric and the fabric starting to tear. It sounds like they aren't very durable but they've taken me from entry level to climbing F6b/C and V3/4 and have recieved much abuse along the way: sloppy beginners footwork in the early days, deep water soloing trips and all day trad multipitches in welsh rain as well as a few washine machine treatments to deal with the smell! Overall they've been fantastic as my first pair of shoes and have performed well indoors and outdooors.

The rubber, once soft, sticks well but I have found that it doesn't perform so well now. I also realise now that its not so good for major heel hook work but for beginner/intermediate level it does the job fine and as long as the heel is a snug fit you will still perform. A problem I've had with other shoes I've tried is that the top of the heel section would really cut into my tendon as I have quite low volume feet, but these have a lower back made specifically for women which makes a huge difference- they are incredibly comfortable!

They stretch quite quickly due to the little holes in the upper part of the shoe and the fact that I, having slightly narrow feet, do up the laces quite tight. I am a uk6 and bought these in a 5.5, however I can now wear them comfortably with socks. I might be tempted to get a 5.0 if I do purchse them again in future but honestly they are incredibly comfortable as they are- especially if you're doing an all day multipitch in hot weather and your feet swell!

Pros: Very comfortable and can happily wear them all day; decent rubber for smearing indoors and outdoors; low back; good for edging; great fit for slightly narrower, low volume feet; brilliant performance/technical shoe that isn't too aggressive for a keen beginner; great allrounder for bouldering, sport and trad.
Cons: Stretch alot as upper fabric is quite weak; laces are annoyingly long; weak for heel hooks; very smelly; take a couple of days to dry if they're wet (but what shoe wouldn't?)

  2. Great all rounder for the intermediate-advanced climber

Posted by Felicity on 22nd Mar 2011

I absolutely love these shoes! I'm on my fourth pair of them and already have the next ones bought as I really don't feel the need to try others anymore.

I came to these from comfy velcro shoes from a different brand, which had served me well on long multipitch routes and days out, but I hadn't realised how much difference a better-fitting, slightly more technical shoe could make.

Climbing: I use these for indoors, sport and trad and they do the job wonderfully. When they're brand new, they're excellent for edging, and I feel like I can be very precise feeling holds with my toes. They're not the best for heel hooks and they're not the stiffest, but if you're only getting one shoe to cover all situations, you really couldn't do much better. I can get up 6c indoors and outside in them without any problem and they stick well to slopey grit and to tiny slate edges.

Fit: I have narrow feet and these are the best-fitting shoes I've found. A few of my friends with similar feet also swear by them. They come with laces and elastic with a toggle, but I've always used the laces. However, they do stretch, probably from half a size to a full size. I buy them a size smaller than my shoe size and can only wear them for a route at a time for the first few uses (but I climb so well in them those first few times!), and eventually they're fine for all-day multipitch and still work on technical things when I lace them up tightly. They rub every so slightly on the tops of my toes when they're done up very tightly for a long time, but that's easily solved by loosening them when belaying.

Cons: They do stretch, so it takes a bit of playing around to get the right size. I usually have 2 pairs on the go: one older pair for most climbing, and one brand new pair for very technical, edgey routes.
They are also prone to being a bit smelly!

  3. Good beginner/intermediate show

Posted by Caimbria on 22nd Mar 2011

The Siren's are an excellent all round beginner/intermediate shoe. Extremely comfortable, they mold to the shape of your foot as you use them, and because of their flat shape are great for day climbing. They excel for smearing and the shape of the toe allows for extremely delicate footwork. They lasted me about 2 years of quite intense climbing (mostly indoor) and I did not notice any significant loss of performance as they got older. As someone who wants comfort as well as performance, I would highly recommend these shoes!!
