Loading... Please wait...An evolution in the species. The G-14 crampons combine the technical performance of forged vertical frontpoints, with the low profile collapsible frame of the G-12, to make an altogether fresh modular and customizable crampon suited to many climbing disciplines.
Grivel's success and experience with the Rambo crampons reinforces the validity of forged points: they penetrate hard ice better, with less vibration and offer the opportunity to combine vertical and horizontal axis.
Front points are simple to configure on the G14 allowing the user to build mono or dual point crampons and replace worn points easily. The low profile of the crampon frame places the climber's foot closer to rock or ice and is less prone to balling up.
At last alpine climbing crampons with the technical performance of their ice and modern mixed counterparts.

Mountain Boot and Crampon Compatability

I bought G14's for use last winter, and took advantage of the fantastic conditions to put them to good use both in the Scottish Highlands and the French Alps. When buying I had swithered over purchasing the Grivel Rambo, but chose these because of their verstility - ie they are at home on steep mixed terrain as well but don't have the restricting broad and angular point arrangement that a higher spec crampon has, and hence did not hinder me on long glacier approaches. I regularly climbed grade VI (mainly mixed) last year and they were solid, could definitely climb harder in them.
I climb in Scarpa Freneys, and did not require the assymatric bars.

These crampons are more comfy to walk in than fully rigid ones (e.g Grivel Rambos) and are practically the same on the route. The supplied tools and spare parts allow these to be used as mono point crampons, an advantage for harder mixed routes and steep ice. While the spare frontpoint cannot be used as a heel spur as with the Rambos this is unlikely to be a problem for all but top mixed and ice climbers.
The strap is a little too long (with a pair of size 46 boots) and will need to be cut with a hot knife to prevent it getting in the way or fraying.
The front wire bale fits Scarpa boots well, it is a good idea to try other brands of boot for fit.
The cramp-o-matic binding is fast to put on and feels very secure.
