The Petzl Tibloc has two main uses. Firstly it can be used as a lightweight emergency ascender, and secondly it can be used as a rope capture device in hauling situation, for example in crevasse rescues etc.

The teeth may look quite aggressive, and while they may pick at the sheath, the core will still be protected and not squashed unlike mechanical ascenders.

The Tibloc is probably not going to be an automatic replacement for your prussik loops as the Tibloc is not really for abseil backups, but they are much more efficient for ascending, so should be worth some consideration.
