The Petzl Verso is a simplified version of the Reverso3, for those that do not want or need all the extra features, and just want a classic belay device. The V shaped groove has a couple of ridges in to provide better control over the friction.

This is a good no frills belay plate as it is fairly compact and can cope well with a range of rope sizes.

First Belay

This was my first ever belay and to be honest, I bought it completely blindly as it was the only one in the shop at the time. I have had it for over a year now and overall I am very impressed. At first i was disappointed because when I got home I realised that I could have bought the slightly more expensive Petzl Reverso 3 which has added parts at each end for attaching the belay to the anchor straight away. This aside my belay has been a very good product, it has stood up to all the abuse I have given it and no wear or tear is visible. The best thing I have found about this belay is the friction, because of the especially deep grooves for braking, the amount of friction produced is fantastic making it easy to hold my much older and heavier brother. Overall a fantastic piece of kit!

I decided to buy the Petzl Verso after using a friend's rather tatty and old VC/ATC style device to learn the basics of belaying. I found the large dimensions of this older belay device cumbersome and found it dropped quite low on my belay loop especially during lead belays when there was a little more slack in the rope. The Verso, with it's reduced weight and dimensions cured this problem and is much easier to use on both single and half/double ropes. I've never felt the need to reverse the device as the friction it creates is adequate on all the ropes i've tried in both wet and dry conditions (8.5mm-10.5mm). I've scored it 4/5 due to the fact there are other auto-locking devices out there but if you need to use 2 ropes i'd say this would be a top choice.
