THE book for beginners

This has to be on the shopping list for anyone looking to climb outside.

Excellent, clear instruction and explanations on all aspects of climbing. Covers everything from warm ups to topping out; including belays, stances, basic technique, etc.

I'd also recommend the DVD 'Get out on Rock' from Libby and Neil Gresham as an accompaniment to this book.

Minor quibbles, some of the diagrams could be a little clearer, but I'm not aware of any better beginners guide.

As the SPA set book it gives you confidence that you're doing things properly.

I strongly recommend this book.
Clear, to the point and very welll illustrated.

This is a great reference book for climbing, it covers many scenarios and techniques. The diagrams are not overcomplicated and enable the reader to understand exactly what is going on.Scenarios are kept within there own boxes separate from the text, allowing you to flip to the required page and follow the diagrams and text even if the book is propped open on your rucksack at the crag. The knots page is also clear and easy to understand. Generally a fantastic book I use it on a regular basis, sometime I also use Mountaincraft and Leadership and the Mountain Skill Handbook to compliment it, or to see different methods. All in all I highly recommend this book.
