Product Description

The Trango Cinch is an assisted belay device which sits alongside other similar belay devices such as the Petzl Grigri.

How it works
You belay like you would with a traditional belay device, the major difference is when it comes to holding a falling climber. In this situation the force of the fall will cause the Cinch to trap the rope dynamically, adding more friction to the system and making it easier to hold the fall. The other main difference compared to a normal belay device is the lever. This is used to lower a climber.

Due to the greater stopping power the Cinch is recommended for sport or indoor wall use, where your runners can take a greater shock than traditional gear. The Cinch is designed to be used for single ropes only with a diameter of 9.4mm to 11mm.

The Cinch is compact and fits comfortably into your hand. It is very easy to use and excels at paying out rope for the leader so makes a great sport on-sighting belay device.

  1. Brilliant paying out, not great for lowering.

Used one of these in El Chorro this summer, and found it the absolute best redpointing device I have tried. None of the locking up of the grigri when paying out slack. The leader can easily pull slack through the device while clipping! Not the best way to go, but it really is that smooth. You have to try it to experience just how fast you can pay out - it really is unbeleivable. But after the send, lowering the leader is a pain. It is hard to get an even pace. THe handle feels too short, and the friction is either there or its not. Stop, start, jerking all over, a pain when stripping something steep. You can sort this by running the rope through a biner in your leg loop. A bit of an effort, but it works surprisingly well. Seems thoroughly worth the hassle for the beautifully smooth payout - so so so much better for normal use than the grigri, so despite the grigri's versatility, this is the device to go for!
