The book is fashioned in Rockfax’s 'award-winning' layout and design, and copiously illustrated with action photographs of the climbs and cliffs that reflect the quality and variety of climbing experiences to be had on offer in the UK’s most popular holiday destination - the West Country. Many of these cliffs have never been illustrated so clearly before and this book has some of the best crag photographs ever taken.
The book covers around 900 of the West Country’s most popular and highest calibre climbs, which span the full spectrum of climbing styles and grades; from committing multi-pitch sea cliff routes, to easy-going inland sport climbs. The rock ranges from the moorland and sea cliff granites of Dartmoor and West Penwith, through the geological weirdness of North Devon and Cornwall, to the multitude of limestone’s on parade in Devon, Somerset, Avon and Dorset.
West Country Climbs is an essential reference book to the climbing available in the region. The guidebook appeals to the holidaying or regular visitor to the West Country whilst also offering a vast amount of up-to-date and inspirational coverage for the local climber.

This is a great guide to get if you are visiting the South West for a trip or two. It covers a wide range of crags and has a good selection of routes on each crag. The diagrams are all clear and I’ve never had a problem route finding using this guide. It also has numerous photos, and is the type of guide you can end up spending time flicking through whilst sat at home.
One thing to note is that the guide is reasonably large and heavy. This isn’t a worry for single pitch crags, but for the sea cliffs and multi-pitch routes which are a large feature of the guide, it can be a problem. I’ve ended up taking photos of the pages and then carrying my digital camera with me to avoid lugging the guide up longer routes.
If you are looking at climbing in a particular area more than a handful of times, then I’d suggest getting the definitive guide for the area. With this only being a selective guide, it does miss out some worthwhile routes, and even some good crags.
Despite the drawbacks, I’d definitely recommend getting this guide if you’ll only be climbing in the South West occasionally, or even if you just want an up to date, fully colour guidebook that is a bit easier to read than the definitive guides tend to be.
