Product Description

The VC Pro 2 is not a direct replacement to the original Variable Controller. It complements the original as it has been designed to take into account the newer modern skinny ropes which are much more common nowadays. It will cope with a greater range of rope diameters, plus the skinner ropes have added 'bite' from the grooves. The VC Pro 2 will therefore easily handle double ropes with diameter as low as 7.7mm and single ropes down to 9mm.

The VC Pro 2 still retains the ability to be used in two different orientations to have the belay device in a higher or lower friction mode, depending on the rope diameter you are using or whether belaying or abseiling, one of the originals strong points.

Overall with its non complicated shape, large keeper loop and ability to cope with a large range of rope diameters this would make a great choice for a belay plate.

  1. Served me well!

Posted by Sam Williams on 1st Dec 2010

I've had one of these belays since I first really got into climbing and its done an excellent job.

The unique design increases the degrees of friction over the normal belay's 360 to create a little extra resistance. This makes the belay perfect if you are belaying a heavier person, the added resistance reduces the difficulty of lowering off a heavier person.

The device hasn't got 5 stars because there is a tendency to stick if you don't pay attention to your belaying. Potentially I can see two problems with this product, a) if you are light yourself then on abseils you could find the extra resistance an issue. b) if you are belaying a lighter person, it is a nightmare and takes lots of getting used to! When belaying my 12 year old brother I always have to allow for extra slack for a smooth run out. (something he is not happy with if he falls!)

However if you get used to it this belay device becomes like an attachment of your body and you won't even notice making the slight adjustments.

vc pro, the worst belay i have ever used, they always stick!

    R+R Response:
I have found that keeping a little slack in the system reduces this issue, and I have not had any major problems. Though I have only used with half ropes. Mike.
