The Wild Country Variable Controller or VC has been around for some time with only minor changes to the slot widths. The popularity of this belay device is what keeps this belay device on Wild Country’s product list.

The defining feature of the VC is its wedge shape. This enables you can use the device in two different orientations, one will provide more friction, and the other will be slicker. This means that you can adjust the braking effects depending on whether you are belaying or abseiling and on different rope diameters.

The Variable Controller is best suited for ropes 9mm to 11mm, though you will still be able to use ropes down to 8.5mm. Basically if you tend to climbing on super skinny ropes, an alternative belay device would be a better choice, the VC Pro 2 has been designed with this in mind.
