The recently updated Scarpa Crux Women's replaces a number of similar predecessor models, condensing many of their best attributes into one shoe, whilst combing this ethos with a number of new features. This female specific model features a lower volume heel and fractionally narrower forefoot.
Simplistic and robust the Scarpa Crux provides a low-cut suede upper, which is both light and fairly abrasion resistant. Plenty of flex down the length of the shoe allows it to contour to the ground, giving reasonable traction on soft terrain, whilst a decent level of lateral stability means the shoe climbs/scrambles competently. This aspect of the shoe is also aided by a Vibram ‘Vertical’ sole unit, which features a smooth “climbing zone” section beneath the front of the toe box. Due to it’s target audience, the tread of the sole is quite low profile and as such will not be quite as efficient on extremely boggy terrain, that said this is a sensible trade off when you consider the Crux’s primary aim: to be a light, sturdy crag approach shoe, well suited to easy climbing and Via Ferratta.
The sizing is just about spot and if anything fractionally generous. The heel provides a good snug low volume fit whilst the toe box offers a bit more volume proportionally. This is all capped off with an efficient lacing system and rear looped pull-tab.
This shoe also plays to the “Green Crowd”, offering a high percentage of recycled materials throughout its construction: 29% recycled polyester mesh, 40% recycled synthetic leather, 100% PC recycled lining; 70% recycled stroebel, Lace and webbing is 100% Ecosensor recycled polyester, Midsole has EcoPure EVA additive to promote degradation in landfill conditions and 25% recycled rubber.
