Ice Screws

Although quality ice screws may appear expensive, the difference in performance over budget models is vast. On anything approaching steep ice ease of placement becomes critical. There are few things more frustrating than trying to force your partners 'bargain' titanium Russian screw off e-bay into the ice ice whilst getting massively pumped!

All of the ice screws we stock work well, and there's probably no single model that is 'best'. Therefore if you haven't purchased ice screws before then it's a good idea if possible to try and test a few to see which suits you before splashing out.

With regards to length - as a rule of thumb in the UK short to medium length (10-16cm) screws come in most useful on our typically thinner ice, whilst for continental conditions more mid-range (16cm ish) are normally used. Longer (22cm) are useful at belays and are also required for building Abalakov threads (a technique not generally required in the UK).
